Easter Fun Festivities

What sort of fun Easter things have you been up to?

We have made salt dough egg candle holders.

Foam Frames (Kit from Dollar Tree)

Since PB was not done with "GLUE!" I cut some shapes and eggs.  Then I gave her a chick in an egg like the frame.

Egg Holder Bouquets

This can be an adorable centerpiece all season long.  On Easter morning you can replace the plastic eggs with colored ones.

You will need:
Cardboard Tubes
Construction Paper or Craft Foam
Scissors
Marker
Glue
Plastic Eggs
Optional: Food Storage Bag (sandwich size)
Optional: Rice, Sand or Beans

  • Cut 4 strips of construction paper that will wrap around the cardboard tube and add 2 inches.
  • On one long edge cut a scalloped edge or fringe.
  • Cover it in green construction paper.
  • Wrap the four flower strips around the cardboard tube and glue/tape into place.
  • Put beans, sand or rice in a sandwich bag and seal.  Place in the tube for stability.
  • Place the egg on the top of the tube.

We made several at different heights and different flower shapes to give us a nice bouquet and surrounded it with some Easter grass.

3 D Easter Egg

Every week before a holiday we are going to post crafts for that holiday that you can make from recycled items.  Today we are using scrap paper to make a fun and festive 3D Easter Egg.

You will need:
3 pieces of white scrap paper
Construction Paper
Glue stick
Scissors

  • Stack the three sheets of scrap white paper and fold them in half.  Cut out an egg shape along the fold, leaving the fold in tact.  You will want to leave about 1 ½ to 2 inches on the bottom out from the fold before you start cutting.  This will make sure your egg will sit flat.
  • Fold the eggs so the used side of the paper is facing out.
  • With the fold facing up cover that side of the egg with glue.
  • Stack an egg on top the glue.
  • Repeat with the egg you just glued down.
  • Cut strips from construction paper and accordion fold them.
  • Glue them onto the white side of the eggs (inside the fold).
  • Bring the two used sides of the eggs together and glue them together.

Cereal Box Basket

This craft would make a cute decoration to be used against a wall or on a bookshelf.

You will need:
Cereal Box
Scissors
Construction Paper
Glue

  • Start by creating the basket.  Starting about a little more than 1/3 up the box from the bottom cut the top 2/3’s of the box off leaving a 2 inch strip in the all the way around to create the handle.
  • Glue the flaps down at the top of the box to secure the handle.
  • Using construction paper create a weaved piece of paper to cover the basket portion of the cereal box. (I needed 4 half sheets to cover the entire basket.)
  • Glue the weaved paper onto the basket.

Fill your basket with all sort of fun things.  Egg Holder Bouquets, Easter Grass, Cardboard Tube Bunny.

Colored Salt

Even though it is technically Spring now, it has seemed like it has been Spring here in Ohio since before Christmas.  We are creating an art supply that can be used to make rain on your Springtime pictures.

Here is what you will need:
Salt
Closable Storage Bag
Blue Food Coloring

Pour about a cup of salt into the bag.
Add around 10 drops of blue food color and close the bag.
Shake the bag until all the salt is blue.
More food coloring can be added until you get your desired color.

Here is what it looks like made.

My intentions were to use the salt as rain on some spring pictures.  Then I wanted to see what colored salt would do to ....  Salt Dough.  I did use blue water to counteract the white flour.  I only used 1 drop for the 1/4 cup of water I needed.  (I made a half batch.)

PB had a blast!

At first it was just pulling apart the Salt Dough.  Then I had to make her several different balls.  Then she made "Big Sausage Mommy" and "Birfday Cake".  Although I did not catch a picture she then started cutting the "paydough" into little pieces using a plastic knife.

Dot Dabber Bows

Dot Dabber Rainbows

One of PB’s favorite ways to paint is using our homemade dot dabbers.  Here is how you can make your own set.  I pulled them out when we were making our Cat in the Hat Pattern Hats during Dr Seuss week.  When I pull these out I have to have easily 10 sheets of paper ready for her.

Our goal today is to try and make rainbows.  Let’s see how PB’s turn out.

You will need:
Dot Dabbers
Paper

Seeing that PB is only 2 I made one to show her what a rainbow is and how to make one.  If you child is older you could just give them the supplies.

This is PB's rainbow.  Even though she did not get the arch, or the rows of colors.  She dabbed them in "rainbow" order.  Such a beautiful rainbow.

Pastel Glue Paint

This is a regular request -- “Mama, paint.”  I have made most of her paints using several different recipes.  I am now starting to get the following request -- “Mama, goo [glue].”  So, I figured it would be fun to combine our two current loves.

Here is what you need:
Glue
Food Coloring

Open the glue bottle and add 5 to 10 drops of food coloring and let sit for 24 hours.  This works best if you are only using a glue bottle that is half full.  The food coloring will disperse throughout the glue without needing to be shaken violently.

Have fun with the pastel glue paint.  (It will not dry clear once it is colored.)
